During the months of January, February and March Riverworks’ Financial Opportunity Center staff (FOC) and seven (7) dedicated IRS-Certified Volunteers focused their efforts on providing tax preparation services to low to moderate income individuals living in the Milwaukee area through the IRS VITA Site Program led by Coretta Herring and Constance Alberts both with ACTS Housing of Milwaukee. This year we met and surpassed last year’s goal of 150 and filed 214 taxes in only 6 weeks! There were many long days and nights for those involved, but the program turned out to be a great success in the end. Total revenue generated for taxpayers through the Earned Income Tax Credit was $207,788. Total State Refund amount was $111,102 and total Federal Refund was $418,093. By completing their returns at our offices, our FOC saved taxpayers approximately $25,680 since they did not have to pay any fees to file their tax returns. Many taxpayers were very appreciated to have had their taxes done at no cost to them by staff and volunteers at Riverworks. We would also like to thank our community partner, UW Credit Union, for their generous financial contribution in helping our VITA year become a success!
